Lesson Overview

Students will have a quick access to Math History of the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will be able to empirically prove the Pythagorean theorem using manipulatives, and finally will be able to apply the theorem to find one of the sides of a right triangle.

Standards

Subject
: Mathematics
Grade
: Seven
Strand
: Measurement and Geometry
Substrand
3.0 : Students know the Pythagorean theorem and deepen their understanding of plane and solid geometric shapes by constructing figures that meet given conditions and by identifying attributes of figures:

California High School Exit Exam (2)
STAR California Standards Test(3) Key Standard on the California Standards Test
Standard:
3.3
Know and understand the Pythagorean theorem and its converse and use it to find the length of the missing side of a right triangle and the lengths of other line segments and, in some situations, empirically verify the Pythagorean theorem by direct measurement.

Grade
: Eight through Twelve
Strand
: Geometry

The geometry skills and concepts developed in this discipline are useful to all students. Aside from learning these skills and concepts, students will develop their ability to construct formal, logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings and problems.

STAR California Standards Test
Substrand:
15.0
Students use the Pythagorean theorem to determine distance and find missing lengths of sides of right triangles.

Student Learning Objectives

Activities

  1. Teacher will display several photos or drawings of where a right triangle is formed through certain situations.
Teacher will ask students to look and identify a shape or figure formed between three different points, on the foto.
  2. Teacher will ask stu
