Students learn the story of their home state, unique in American history in terms of its vast and varied geography, its many waves of immigration beginning with pre-Columbian societies, its continuous diversity, economic energy, and rapid growth. In addition to the specific treatment of milestones in California history, students examine the state in the context of the rest of the nation, with an emphasis on the U.S. Constitu-tion and the relationship between state and federal government.

Activities

  1. Students will observe the teacher creating an "About Me" PowerPoint presentation. Students will then observe the teacher presenting this PP show.
  2. Students will begin their exploration of PowerPoint by creating a three slide "About Me" PowerPoint presentation. The teacher will provide much guidance at this step.
  3. Students will enhance their skills with PowerPoint by working in a group to create a short PowerPoint presentation on a character from a classroom story. This presentation should contain 4-5 slides.
  4. Students will individually create a full-length PowerPoint presentation on one of the 21 Spanish Missions. This presentation should contain at least 6 slides.

Assessment
Students will be assessed in a number of different areas. The first will concern researching skills. Each student will be asked to locate and report on 5 different elements of his/her CA Mission; founding, (add)
Each student wil be assessed using the attached 12 point rubric by the teacher, his/her parent or guardian, and by him/herself. The totals from each assessment will be added, with a maximum of 36 points.
The second area of assessment will be PowerPoint creation/presentation. Students will be expected to create a six card PowerPoint presentation, including an introduction card and one card for each research element. Students will then present their PowerPoint shows to the class. Students will be assessed by the teacher, using the attached 21 point rubric.
The maximum number of points any student can receive is 57.
Finally, students veiwing the presentation will evaluate each students' presentation by answering questions on a short survey. This evaluation will work as feedback to the group. It will not be included in the final grades. Please find peer evaluation attached.
