Students learn the story of their home state, unique in American history in terms of its vast and varied geography, its many waves of immigration beginning with pre-Columbian societies, its continuous diversity, economic energy, and rapid growth. In addition to the specific treatment of milestones in California history, students examine the state in the context of the rest of the nation, with an emphasis on the U.S. Constitu-tion and the relationship between state and federal government.

Activities

  1. Students will take a pre-test on the daily lives of the Native and Nonnatives Americans living at the California missions
  2. Students will gather information about the daily lives of Native Americans at the California missions from books and several web sites that will be provided by the teacher by way of a treasure hunt on a web page.
  3. Students will create a Venn diagram that will compare and contrast the daily lives of Native Americans at the California missions compared to nonnatives who lived at the missions.
  4. Students will type a journal entry from a Native American's point of view of how life is at the missions.
  5. Students will take a post test.
