Student Learning Objectives

Activities

  1. (If using this lesson in a first year class, this should be implemented towards the end of school. Advanced students could do this activity in the first few months of the school year.)

    Pretest or KWL-
Students will take a pretest or teacher will lead the students in a KWL activity.
    K- What do you Know?
W- What do you Want to know?
    L- What did you Learn?

After you have introduced the topic, give each student a printed KWL worksheet. They need to have a pencil or pen also.

In the first column, the students need to write what they already KNOW about Art Mediums. Do not help them! This needs to be what they remember from lectures in the past.

Next, they need to fill in the second column with what they WANT to know. These are questions that they want answered.
  2. Discussion
After all students are done, have a group dicussion about what they know and what they want to know. Either you or one of your students can write the questions on the board, overhead or using an LCD projector, project them on the wall by typing them into a word processing program.

Sample Questions for the W column:
What are different types of media?
    What is watercolor made of?
    Why are they used?
    How are they different?
What different effects can be achieved?
How does the media influence the perception of the artwork?
  3. Internet time
    Students are given the question:
How does the media influence the perception of the artwork?

Students will be given computer lab time to find several pieces of artwork from one artist. (It is best if they have the same or similar subject matter.) Different mediums need to be presented.
Print if possible, examples of different media from same artist
Students will then compare the different artwork and see how they perceive the works.

Fill out worksheet asking questions about works.
Does the medium change how they are perceived? Is a statue made of marble more desirable then one made of wood?
