Symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols are central in algebra. Through the study of algebra, a student develops an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics and the sciences. In addition, algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem-solving situations.

Substrand 1.0 : Students identify and use the arithmetic properties of subsets of integers and rational, irrational, and real numbers, including closure properties for the four basic arithmetic operations where applicable:

2. To name,classify, and apply identity and inverse properties of the addition and multiplication laws.
3. To name,classify, and apply the closure law for addition and multiplication.
4. To name,classify, and apply Special properties of Zero.

Activities

1. Teacher use a projector hooked to a laptop computer, and get Math.com website.
2. Students read definitons and look examples of commutive, associative laws, then answer a quiz.
