Lesson Overview

Standards

Subject
: Mathematics
Grade
: Eight through Twelve
Strand
: Algebra II

This discipline complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of algebra I and geometry. Students who master algebra II will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in various content areas, including the solution of systems of quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the binomial theorem, and the complex number system.

STAR California Standards Test Key Standard on the California Standards Test
Substrand:
8.0
Students solve and graph quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, or using the quadratic formula. Students apply these techniques in solving word problems. They also solve quadratic equations in the complex number system.

Student Learning Objectives

Activities

  1. Introductory Activity:

Teacher demonstration of the three methods of finding the zeros of a quadratic equation. Students will do problems using graph paper and a table, and then by using a graphing calcultor. then .
  2. Enabling Activity:

    (a) Students will work several problems using factoring, graphing and a table of values to find the zeros.

    (b) Students will print-out TI-83 split-screen depicting the graph and table of a quadratic equation.
  3. Culminating Activity:

    (a) Students will be assigned a worksheet in which they will be given one of the following pieces of information and then will fill in the remaining information:(1) equation (2) graph (3) table (4) zeros.

    (b) Homework assignement: P200 #1-20.
