Student Learning Objectives

Activities

  1. 1) Teacher will read a story problem to the students and use manipulatives using the overhead to demonstrate the concept.
    Students will listen to the story problem.
    Students will identify the numbers mentioned in the story.
    Teacher will demonstrate clue words to help students identify
    process. (addition: more in story, in all, total;
    subtract: more in question, less, left)
    Teacher will write number sentence on the overhead to reflect the story and solve the problem.
    Teacher will model several stories with students.

    2) Student will tell his/her own story problem to the class using manipulatives on the overhead.
    Students will identify numbers, process, and solve number sentence.

    3) Students will read story problems from a worksheet while teacher demonstrates the process.

    4) Students will read story problems and solve the story problems independently in class or for homework.

    5) Students will write their own stories, solve the story problems with their number sentence.
    Students will draw a picture reflecting the story and number sentence.

Assessment
Students will solve five out of ten story problems correctly: writing a story, answering the question to the story with a number sentence, and drawing a picture to reflect in the story problem.
Additional Comments
Students are able to relate real-life experiences and problem solving to math. After the students finish all the activities described above, they are better able to look at any story problem and know the process necessary to solve it. They will be able to identify the numbers and process in order to solve any one to three digit story problem.
