  1. Individually take the pretest as a hand out (copy avilable online if student is absent)
    In small groups, complete manipulative #1 using opera terminology.
  2. Receive and take notes describing what opera is and where the term "soap opera" came from.
  3. Collectively read the plot from an opera.
    Complete manipulative #2 using Opera terminology (manipulative available online if student is absent).
  4. Discuss each "scene" from the opera comparing it to "real life" and those "lives" experienced on television soap operas.
  5. View the opera on Video [ Listen to the opera via CD if video is not available ].
    Complete manipulative #3 for homework using Opera terminology (manipulative available online if student is absent).
  6. In groups of 3-4 students, create an outline for an opera complete with characters, plot(s), set use and choices of music.
    Groups will present to the class their results.

    Individually take the posttest (available online if student is absent).

The students will be assessed utilizing both Structured and Open-Ended responses. The final project will utilize some aspects of the Performance assessment.

Students will successfully complete written activities. Group participation is paramount to receiving a good assessment. Students must show that they have taken sufficient notes from the audio and visual lessons. Students must work together to create a convincing "opera" plot and scenario. Students will not be expected to sing or perform but will be expected to present their completed project to the class for peer review.

Additional Comments
If time permits, one or two groups will be chosen based on grade to present their finished projects to the parents during Parent / Teacher Conference night. All works will be posted on the School Campus / Music Program Web Site in an abbreviated format.
